high gas barrier polymer-based nanocomposite design by combining experimental, modelling and machine learning approaches – BANCODEMM

Submission summary

BANCODEMM project aims to explore new routes in the quest of robust guidelines to design polymer-based nanocomposites displaying enhanced barrier properties from combined experimental, theoretical and numerical investigation. In this project, the whole chain from nanocomposite constituents to processing, microstructure, physicochemical parameters and functional properties will be considered. Specific parameters will be gathered from the critical analysis of literature data and from the detailed characterization of nanocomposites specifically developed to take into account the wide range of nanocomposite processing routes and the variety of morphologies developed. Appropriate machine learning and artificial intelligence approaches will be used to identify relevant parameters, hyper-parameters and supervised clustering or classification of data. The BANCODEMM project will allow providing answers to fundamental questions related to the transport mechanism of small molecules within nanocomposite materials. The project will also allow identifying ways to optimize these materials. The most interesting architectures will be selected and refined using finite element simulations and then validated experimentally through synthesis and detailed characterization. In this final optimization step, the minimisation of the environmental impact of the chosen synthesis processes as well as their ease of transposition to industrial scale will be considered. Thus, a new generation of materials with optimized barrier properties will be proposed on the basis of a robust methodology that can be extended in the near future to a wide range of functional materials.
