5C-for-5G: Coordinated Caching, reCommendation, and Communication of Content for 5G Cellular Networks – 5C-for-5G

Submission summary

Caching popular content at the edge of 5G networks is needed to keep up with the data tsunami. However, research in the domain has been largely fragmented, focusing only on the access part (e.g. coded caching) or backhaul/core (e.g. femto-caching), and using conflicting assumptions and metrics. What is more, current research on caching mostly ignores architectural developments of 5G, such as cloudRAN and slicing. Finally, there is a large gap between what operators are trying to offer (Gb/s peak rates) and what users really need (inexpensive flat rate plans of TB/month) to support their entertainment-oriented consumption patterns. To this end, 5C-for-5G has the following main objectives: 1) Bridging the gap between network-theoretic and communication-theoretic caching; 2) Bridging the gap between content-centric cache optimization and entertainment-centric content consumption; 3) Bridging the gap between the storage and transmission clouds.
