Giving birth in times of pandemic: weaknesses and resilience of maternity wards in France – MATER-Covid19

Submission summary

The Covid-19 pandemic forced the reorganization of care including into maternity wards. It re-emerged the polemics on obstetric violence with the denunciation of two practices observed during childbirth in some establishments: the imposition of wearing the mask and the refusal to allow patients to be accompanied. This project proposes to study the reorganization of maternity wards since the beginning of the pandemic, as well as the experiences of health professionals and women. Three methodological tools will be used: participant observation in maternity wards, semi-structured interviews with women and health professionals (n=60), and self-questionnaires intended to women who have given birth (n=200). Recruitment will be done through two major Paris public hospitals (Hôpital Necker and CHI Poissy Saint-Germain) and the birth center in Reunion Island. This will allow to document both a plurality of practices and a geographical diversity. Two researchers in sociology will lead the project: Clémence Schantz (IRD, coordinator) and Virginie Rozée (Ined). The team, which has already been set up, includes social science researchers, health professionals and a users’ association. This 12-month project will help in the decision-making process concerning the organization of maternity wards by shedding light on the social dynamics that accompany measures to control the epidemic in France. The budget of 66,990€ will cover the research fields, the internship of four Master students, the recruitment of a research engineer, the organization of a workshop in Reunion Island and an international conference in Paris, and the publication of three articles in open access.
