Polaritonic devices based on hybrid perovskite in novel photonic crystal design – POPEYE

Submission summary

Cavity polaritons have recently emerged as a potential platform for all-optical logical devices. These exotic information carriers arise from the strong coupling of photons emitted in optical cavities and excitons generated in quantum wells. Thanks to their hybrid light/matter nature, polaritons can propagate ballistically like photons while self-interacting like excitons. They therefore offer many advantages for integrated photonics compared to purely photonic systems. To date, all attempts at harnessing the hybrid physical properties of these bosonic quasiparticles have relied on cryogenically cooled structures. Incorporating them into practical applications will require operating these devices at room temperature. The POPEYE project aims to develop a radically new platform of all-optical polaritonic devices at room temperature, combining remarkable excitonic features of hybrid perovskites with novel photonic crystal designs. Dispersion engineering of photonic crystals by symmetry breaking will be used to tailor the effective mass of polaritons on demand. This will make it possible to optimise polariton propagation in an on chip photonic circuit, and to strengthen nonlinear effects – the motor of logical commutations. These two key elements will be adopted in a universal design that can be functionalized as a platform that includes all logic elements necessary to perform computing operations for classical communication. The same design can also be operated in polariton blockade regime to deliver single polaritons currents for quantum information.
