Process for the reversible adsorption of micropollutants in water – PARME

Submission summary

The pollution of wastewater by organic emerging contaminants (such as pharmaceuticals, pesticides, solvents, etc...) in the form of traces (ng/L~µg/L) was reported in several works. These micropollutants are mainly not removed by the conventional wastewater treatment plants. Due to their wide range of adsorption, activated carbons may develop high performances to remove these targeted micropollutants of nanometric size. For this reason, the use of these adsorbents at the end of the tertiary process of water treatment is required to remove the emerging contaminants. Presently, the saturated activated carbons are rarely ex situ regenerated and their periodic replacements are costly.
The project “PARME”, in relation with the challenge of obtaining “clean” water, aims to develop a reversible adsorption-desorption process of micropollutants onto Activated Carbon Fabrics (ACF). This process will allow the in situ regeneration of fabrics saturated with micropollutants, through the application of an electrochemical polarization.
The project is focused on the optimization of the adsorption conditions of the target micropollutants onto activated carbon fabrics. The adsorption-desorption properties of the pollutants (alone or in mixture) will be correlated to the surface chemistry, the multi-scale structure of ACFs, and the solution characteristics (pH, concentration, temperature, etc...). The electrochemical desorption will be studied as a function of the liquid medium in order to optimize the regeneration conditions of ACFs. The industrial applicability will be studied firstly through a techno-economic study of the process, and secondly by the realization of a laboratory semi-industrial system ultimately tested for drinking and waste water treatment.
