Fate of Inorganic during Waste Gasification – TIGRE

Submission summary

The project developed in this industrial chair concerns the development of efficient models to predict the behavior of inorganic compounds during the thermochemical conversion of waste by pyrogasification. The problems of fouling, deposits, distribution between phases (solid / liquid (tar) / gas), composition, speciation and stability of the final phases are among the most important operational problems of these units during the transformation of feedstocks such as SRF type (Solid Recovered Fuel). The chair is supported by ENGIE, an international company which plays a leading role in the energy transition towards zero carbon in order in particular to meet the challenges of the 100% renewable gas national plan by 2050. The academic candidate is Dr. “HDR” Jean-Henry FERRASSE from M2P2 laboratory (Aix-Marseille University / CNRS / École Centrale Marseille). The proposed research program is based on four themes aimed at studying the ways foreseen to improve the operability and performances of gasifiers, but also to reduce the downstream stages of the treatment of synthesis gas (also called producer gas) before upgrading. To do this, modeling the behavior of mineral phases has become essential to adapt the tools for industrialization of pyrogasification technologies in fluidized beds. The approaches developed today are essentially thermodynamic equilibrium, or totally empirical and centered on coal; they are inapplicable in the context of solid residues such as waste. The research topics that structure the chair are as follows:
- Effect of alternating atmospheres in double fluidized bed technology;
- Effects of mixtures of materials chosen for the bed;
- Modeling of transfers of inorganics out of equilibrium;
- Systemic modeling and simulation of a gasifier integrating inorganics.

The chair's governance will be ensured by three committees:
- A technical committee which will meet monthly to mainly ensure the follow-up of the various tasks. This committee will be carried out by the holder of the chair, the work packages (WPs) managers and the technical managers of the company;
- A steering committee which will meet twice a year to discuss and guide, if necessary, the budget and any related modifications. This committee will be composed of the holder of the chair, representatives of the three supervisory bodies of the laboratory (Aix-Marseille University, CNRS, Ecole Centrale Marseille) and of the company (ENGIE);
- An international scientific advisory board made up of French and international scientists who will meet at least twice during the term of the chair and whose role will be to assist the steering committee by giving an opinion on the medium-term orientations of the chair. He may also formulate opinions for possible collaborations. The integration of new partners will be discussed in this committee.

In addition to the work of permanent researchers from M2P2 and ENGIE, the means implemented in accordance with 3 PhD funding, 3 years of post-doctorate, administrative support, support for experimental resources and analyzes carried out by subcontracting. The dissemination of methodological results of research to a general public is a stated objective of the project in order to provide a strategic framework for the future development of the models developed. In addition to the fact that all articles will be published in the "Gold open access" format, non-confidential data and results will be published on a website dedicated to the Chair. This site will also contain an intranet to allow the exchange of non-public data between the members of the project. This dissemination policy will be reinforced by the organization of two international workshops, where the main international research groups regarding the four themes will be invited. These events will be complemented by a set of master / doctorate training courses organized in collaboration with the new institutes of Aix-Marseille University.
