Transnational call : SPPEXA - Software for Exascale Computing
ANR participate to a call for transnational collaborative projects SPPEXA "Software for Exascale Computing", in conjunction with the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Japanese Science and Technology Agency (JST).
SPPEXA is an international initiative that is an outgrowth of a DFG programme launched in 2013. Opening up the initiative to international participants comes on the heels of the success of the German initiative, as well as other global initiatives such as the pilot G8-HORCs programme in 2010-2011 on environmental applications of exascale computing, and the European Exascale Software Initiative (EESI).
The objective of this call is to strengthen scientific cooperation between Germany, Japan and France on the challenges of ICT themes large datasets and exaflopique calculation and support research addressing scientific challenges that international action results can tackle.
The SPPEXA-2 call for proposals will finance bilateral or trilateral collaborative projects of three years’ duration, with the goal of enabling German, French and Japanese teams to work together. The DFG will act as the lead agency for SPPEXA-2, i.e. it will be in charge of the reception and evaluation process. Funding decisions will be made jointly and each agency will finance its own country’s teams.
The call secretariat is supported by the DFG. ANR will only fund the French partners of trilateral selected projects (Germany, Japan, France). Funding will be awarded for a period of three years, with a start of the projects in January 2016.

SPPEXA-2 falls within the scope of the major societal challenge no. 7 of the ANR’s Work Programme 2015 concerning Information and communication Society and particularly the research theme titled “Données massives et calcul intensif: enjeux et synergies pour la simulation numérique” (Big data and high performance computing: challenges and synergies for digital simulations). SPPEXA-2 is part of the component « construction de l’Espace Européen de la recherche (EER) et attractivité de la France » (Building the European Research Area ERA and France's international attractiveness).
