Funding – 2022

First call for projects "Scientific exploration of data from research infrastructures” - ESDIR 2022

This call aims at helping the scientific valorization of remarkable data, observations and measurements that can only be realized within the framework of these infrastructures and long-term programmes labeled nationally or internationally. The ESDIR 2022 call for projects is dedicated to the research campaigns conducted on these two large infrastructures and whose data are already acquired or in the process of guaranteed acquisition by the start of the projects (end 2022).

France invests significant resources in the development and implementation of large research infrastructures, whether on a national scale or in the context of large international cooperative projects. These resources are mainly used for initial investments or to fund experimental campaigns.

However, unlike other countries, France has not set up specific support programmes for the scientific exploration of data obtained by these research infrastructures.

To fill this gap, it was decided to develop a first pilot research call voluntarily limited to two large infrastructures. This research-funding support instrument aims at supporting research projects focusing on the scientific exploration of data from research infrastructures.

Scope and scientific objectives

This first call for projects ESDIR 2022 is limited to two research infrastructures and to the following topics

  • Axis 1: the French Oceanographic Fleet (FOF)

    Proposals can relate to any scientific theme. Proposals must focus exclusively to the use of data acquired by scientific projects selected by the National Commission of the Offshore Fleet (CNFH) for which at least one cruise mission took place in 2021.

  • Axis 2: CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC)

    Proposals must address exclusively the following two topics:

    • The understanding of the mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking in a broad sense, e.g. the determination of the couplings of the Higgs boson and its self-coupling ;

    • The search for new physics beyond the Standard Model, either through a direct approach of searching for new particles or through an indirect approach of precision measurements.

In addition to data analysis activities, projects may include related work to better use the raw detector data (characterization and performance improvement on physics objects) as well as related software development.
