1st edition of the Franco-Czech bilateral call for nuclear projects - ANR TACR

France and the Czech Republic have been key players in the European Nuclear Alliance, leading the way in reforming the electricity market. Both governments aim to enhance these collaborations, especially in research cooperation. The French and Czech governments wish to strengthen these ties, particularly through cooperation in the field of research.

In light of this, the ANR has finalized a framework agreement with its counterpart TA CR (Technology Agency of the Czech Republic) to provide funding for collaborative research and innovation projects in the nuclear domain.

As a result of this collaboration, the 8th call for proposals of the Czech SIGMA programme has been opened up to the participation of French teams in bilateral projects. This programme, implemented by the TA CR agency, aims to support international cooperation in applied research by Czech companies and research organisations.

Through this programme, at the request of the Directorate General for Energy and Climate (DGEC), the ANR also aims to support the emergence of Franco-Czech teams in this field.

For the 2024 edition, French teams are invited to participate in research projects in collaboration with one or more Czech teams in the following research themes:

  1. Safety and reliability of present nuclear power plants (nuclear reactors)
    1. Research in the field of severe accidents studies
    2. Research in the field of Radiation on Aging Concrete Structures
    3. Research in the field of modern materials - Accident tolerant fuels (ATF), Small modular reactor fuel (SMR), Additive Manufacturing, High-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU)
  2. Research on materials and fuel cycle to support research reactors
  3. Research in the field of the Generation IV reactors (GFRs and MSRs)
  4. Support for the development of Small modular reactors (SMRs) – including collaboration with NUWARD

The budget support the French partners in these projects, totalling €1m for this first call, has been allocated to the ANR by the DGEC.

Projects will be submitted and evaluated in a single stage. Each project will initially be evaluated by two separate evaluation committees, made up of scientific experts appointed by the ANR and the TACR respectively. The ANR and TA CR will then make a final decision on which projects to fund, based on the rankings previously established.

Projects must be submitted simultaneously on the ANR and TACR platforms, in accordance with the procedures of each agency, before the closing dates indicated.

The consortium must include a Czech industrial partner to coordinate the Czech partners.  On the French side, there is no obligation to involve a business or public research partner. On the other hand, the participation of both companies and public research partners (or similar), although not compulsory, is encouraged and will be appreciated.

The partners of the selected projects will be funded directly by their respective national agencies: the ANR for the French partners and the TACR for the Czech partners. Consequently, national regulations apply. In particular, French partners are advised to read the documents relating to ANR funding.
