PLAS@PAR gathers physicists from Paris area, working in astrophysical, natural and industrial plasmas and thus studying plasma in a very large variety of temperatures and densities. Research and teaching actions thought in a synergic way, are stimulated by the perspectives offered by large-scale facilities of different disciplines (EQUIPEX APOLLON and SPIRAL2/GANIL, but also LMJ, ITER, MMS, SOLEIL, GENCI, ELI, FAIR/GSI), and by the multiple applications of plasmas in everyday life like for depollution, aerospace and health. Communication and outreach actions complete the efforts towards a general audience
After having contributed to structure the plasma M2 offer in the Ile de France, it now plays a significant role in the SU Bachelor program through new hands-on activities and by organizing every year the L3/M1 international Plasma summer school. It also supports international student mobility through L3-M2 internships at, and offers attractive positions to master (M2) foreigner students and to PhD students. A training of teachers of middle and high schools has been set up with success. All those actions reinforce the visibility of plasma physics.
The research project is structured around transverse themes: turbulence, instabilities, energy transport, magnetic reconnection, shocks, matter under extreme conditions, plasmas in molecular gases and interaction of plasmas with solids and liquids. Among its success stories for the period (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBPMRuD1ekI), let us highlight: the first laboratory study of a magnetized stellar jet, using the combination of an external magnetic field and a laser produced plasma (technique now being implemented on NIF); the use of Brillouin scattering as a way to amplify intense fs laser pulses through a ns laser beam (of interest for APOLLON and ELI); the development of new generation plasma thrusters (startup creation and success to the H2020 program); the development of the PIC code SMILEI (with USR 3441).
