ECOFECT’s ambition is to create an interdisciplinary culture that integrates researchers from several scientific areas (e.g., infectiology, clinic, ecology, evolution, mathematical modeling) in order to generate innovative scientific advances, at the highest international level, on the understanding, prevention and treatment of infectious diseases. To this end, ECOFECT has developed strategies in research, education, and dissemination: (i) 3 types of calls for proposals have been launched, covering fundamental to applied projects; (ii) working groups were set up around major health issues; (iii) courses and thematic schools were proposed; (iv) scientific events have been co-organized with industrial partners and v) support has been provided to highly innovative technological platforms. Projects funded by ECOFECT allow LabEx teams to orientate part of their research thanks to a novel interdisciplinary thinking. They also benefit from additional sources of funding (leverage effect). Since 2012, 40 projects have been submitted and 18 funded (total of 3.6 M€), including 3 ‘Proof-of-concept’ projects. To date, ECOFECT has published 106 articles, 6 LabEx teams are currently participating to European Projects and 2.2 M€ of additional funding has been obtained by the teams on collaborative projects in line with ECOFECT (leverage effect), 3 in partnership with the industry. 9 patents have been filed and 4 start-ups created, including EnyoPharma that raised 22 M€. ECOFECT has co-organized 5 international conferences in 2016, 3 in partnership with the industry. ECOFECT has developed interdisciplinary Master degree courses and in Sept. 2016 launched a new University Degree (unique in Europe) integrating evolutionary sciences into medicine teaching. The 4 LabEx in Lyon working on health issues have strengthened their existing links by co-organizing a scientific symposium (Dec. 2016) that promoted novel interdisciplinary exchanges and collaborations between PIs and pre/post-docs.
