The Morphoscope2 project aims at establishing state-of-the art facilities for optical imaging and image analysis of living systems. This unique platform with emphasis on technology development and innovation is coordinated by Ecole Polytechnique, one of the funding members of the Campus Paris-Saclay initiative. It will integrate cutting-edge technology in photonic microscopy and computational analysis dedicated to in vivo multiscale investigations in integrative biology, based on the expertise of its core developing partners.
Imaging equipment is organized along three complementary technologies: (1) multi-contrast nonlinear microscopy for deep imaging of intact tissues; (2) light-sheet excitation microscopy for rapid imaging of semi-transparent samples; (3) super-resolution optical and soft-X microscopy for high-resolution imaging. In addition, the bioimage analysis and computing part of the project includes the development of data visualization tools and processing workflows. Finally, one part of the methodological development is devoted to novel labeling methods.
During the first stage of the project, imaging and analysis methods are being developed by the project developing partners. When validated, methods are opened to additional applicative projects through Polytechnique and partners facilities.
At the beginning of 2017, project phase 1 is significantly advanced with in particular the implementation and validation of the multiphoton systems dedicated to tissue imaging and the design of new laser sources (technology (1)), the design of light-sheet excitation microscopy (technology (2)), the design of the soft-X imaging objective (technology ), the exploration of labeling schemes and the development of image processing workflows.
Phase 2 has started in the form of pilot studies involving project core developing partners and some of the collaborating partners, and should be fully active by the end of 2017.
