Equipex CLIMCOR aims at improving the French capacities in term of coring. It is about national equipment that must allow the French scientific community to participate in the national and international programs calling by relying on this technique of sampling.
Four equipments of CLIMCOR-ICE are in phase of finalization, the scientific fallout this day remaining modest. However the good valuation already assured around the equipment SUBGLACIOR is to be noticed. Indeed this revolutionary instrument, first prototype of the kind at the world level, relying on a great deal of R&D led by a team of about twenty researchers and engineers stemming from four laboratories. The acquired light drilling facility was successfully used in the French Alps and the results at the origin of the Ice memory project endorsed by UNESCO. The scientific caravans have been used for the first time this year through the ASUMA ANR project.
Thanks to CLIMCOR-CONTINENT, a mobile device of lake coring may be used from the deep lakes (<150m) up to the small lakes of high latitude / high height. The first preliminary tests for the in-hole hammer took place in close collaboration with the company Uwitec. These tests allowed validating the use of 2 different hammers. Corings in extreme conditions on the archipelago of Kerguelen confirmed the relevance of the choices of development of CLIMCOR i) the doubling of the park of barges of core drilling to face the long-term mobilizations of the equipment ii) The increase of the size of the main barge to face the conditions of particularly binding swells for the equipments on the big deep lakes.
In CLIMCOR-OCEAN, the Siamese coring winch was modified according to what was planned in the CLIMCOR proposal and an innovative cable was installed there. The tests allowed appreciating the qualities of the new equipment, and the adjustments realized during the complete construction work of the renovation of the Marion Dufresne in 2015. This allowed retrieving the first cores in 2016 through ACCLIMATE ERC project. Furthermore the total renovation of Marion Dufresne was completed on time with the first cruise January 2016
