CILEX is a project initiated by more than ten laboratories on the Plateau de Saclay, working on high-power lasers, laser-generated plasmas, particle acceleration, radiation sources and high-energyparticle physics. The objective of CILEX is to build a new facility accessible to the scientific community and dedicated to laser-matter interaction and high-field physics in unexplored regimes. This facility is composed of several laser beams, including a multi-PW short-pulse beam, and two experimental areas dedicated to complementary applications. The funding obtained through CILEX is mainly dedicated to the refurbishment of already existing buildings in l'Orme des Merisers and to a large part of the equipment to be installed in the experimental areas. This budget comes in complement with a specific funding mainly dedicated to the laser itself.
Most of the building is now ready and the lasers are being progressively installed. The main parts of the experimental equipement have been ordered and will arrive during 2017.
The first laser shots on target at the level of 1PW are scheduled at the beginning of 2018. The laser power will progressively increase to about 4PW in 2018. After about 18-24 months of internal (CILEX) and commissioning experiments, the facility will be open to external groups from France and Europe. In addition, other users can access the facility through collaborations with internal teams.
The project is regularly controlled by the "Conseil d'Administration", including all funding agencies, and by an international Scientific and Technical Committee. A Steering Committee including all partners is in charge of the important decisions concerning the project, such as priorities and financial modifications from the initial plan.
Phase 2 of the project started in 2013 and its annual budget will increase together with the evolution of the equipment and the experiments.
