The objective is the aqcuisition of a 800 MHz NMR spectrometer equipped for solids and liquids, with a gyrotron that can generate intense microwave irradiation that is able to induce dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) to enhance the intensity of NMR signals. In addition to the gyrotron, we have added equipment for dissolution DNP. Then instrument is accesible to outside users via the IR-RMN-THC of the CNRS.
It took 6 months to prepare the purchase of the 800 MHz NMR instrument, and 18 months to manufacture the machine. Initially, the 800 MHz instrument was installed at ICSN in Gif-sur-Yvette, while the building of ENS was being redesigned and rebuilt. The 800 MHz instrument could not be used for its main objective (MAS-DNP) while its was operating in Gif, for lack of sufficient liquid nitrogen supply. It was moved in March 2016 to ENS. The equipment for dissolution DNP has been installed in the September-October 2016. The installation of the MAS-DNP accessories and all other post-reinstallation tests were completed by October 2016. The instrument has been fully operational since October 2016.
The instrument has been 100% operational since October 2016, to the entire satisfaction of all users, both internal and external. All users are in regular contacts with the project coordinator. We plan to convene a meeting of all users and project partners at the end of 2017 to review the procedures for the allocation of time-slots and of support by the staff of the host institution.
