Viral circulation and social dynamics – Civyq

Submission summary

The objective of the Civyq project is to respond to the "Epidemic and social dynamics" research axis of the Action Liban 2021 project. It addresses several themes of this axis: the production of norms and practices; the evolution of forms of sociability, social cohesion and collective behaviours and the emergence of new forms of solidarity and partnerships; the links between science and society and the role of the media and researchers in scientific communication and public awareness.

Our aim is to develop a human ecology of the pandemic in order to understand how the inhabitants of this country collectively experience the circulation of the virus in their ordinary lives through the study of social practices, discursive productions and the circulation of different forms of knowledge. We will try to grasp how the population adapts to the different constraints and injunctions to face the health crisis, in its different embeddings with the economic and political crises, to which are added the trauma and the consequences of the explosion of the port of Beirut on August 4, 2020.

Concretely, we want to carry out several investigations in the everyday places where actors meet, communicate and agree to find ways to invent, adapt and preserve themselves in order to build their own resilience. We will organise our work around four work packages (WPs) that will enable us to understand the multiplicity of behaviours and modes of intervention, so as to measure the impact of the crisis and to contribute to the relevance of public health operations and the production of prevention messages. These WPs focus on :

1- Social inventiveness and behavioural changes to understand the socio-cultural impact of the pandemic (WP1),
2- the languages of the epidemic to study linguistic inventions, rumour exchange, and the discourses emitted within the public sphere of communication (WP2)
3- on the place and role of NGOs in the fight against the epidemic, their modes of action and collaborations with scientists and medical actors (WP3)
4- on ordinary health practices, self-medication, the circulation and the imaginary of medicines (WP4).

Each work package will result in a policy brief and (at least) one publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. We will also mobilise the video and sound tool to produce micro-documentaries and podcasts on the relationship of the inhabitants to the epidemic, as well as on particularly salient points of the different work packages. A concluding workshop will allow an exchange with the stakeholders identified in the project (politicians, scientists, NGOs) and the sharing of data and analyses developed during the surveys.
