Building a 3D reference model of the lithosphere beneath metropolitan France – FRlitho3D

Submission summary

FRlitho3D aims to provide a reference geophysical model of the lithosphere beneath metropolitan France, building on recent efforts to increase the density of seismological observations, notably in the framework of the RESIF national research infrastructure. All the models developped will target a homogeneous and high resolution and will include parameters such as P- and S-wave velocities, density, quality factors and geometry of the main interfaces.
These models will provide key elements for a better understanding of the geological structures of the crust and upper mantle beneath France, for a better use of renewable subsurface resources, and for improved seismic monitoring and seismic risk assessment over the entire metropolitan territory.
To achieve this goal, we will use various observables, such as local/regional/global earthquake arrival times, receiver functions, surface wave dispersion curves obtained from ambient noise correlations, complete teleseism waveforms, coda decay of regional earthquakes, ground and satellite gravity measurements. Based on the complementary sensitivities of these observables to our target parameters, we will apply optimized analysis and inversion strategies, mastered and developed by the participants as well complementary innovative approaches. In particular, we will focus on the production of multi-parametric models derived from the joint inversion of various data sets and we will evaluate the resolution and uncertainties of our models through Bayesian or Backus-Gilbert frameworks. Each model will then be tested against data not used in the inversions to measure its reliability. A homogenization technique will be applied to determine the effective part common to all models. We will also quantify the impact of these new models for a better characterization of earthquakes in terms of location, depth and magnitude and for other critical parameters in the assessment of seismic risks.
FRlitho3D is a community initiative that aims to build sustainable fundations to produce updated and enhanced versions of a geophysical reference model over France, even beyond the timescale of the project. All models developed within FRlitho3D will be qualified, versioned and compliant with F.A.I.R. principles, so as to be easily accessible and reusable by a large community of users, both for fundamental and applied objectives.
