Effluents from a photodegradation process of brominated flame retardants in WEEE – EffPhoB

Submission summary

The waste treatment directive (2012/19/EU) requires the selective treatment of plastics loaded with Brominated Flame Retardants (BFRs), which can no longer be recycled, buried or exported without prior treatment guaranteeing the elimination of targeted harmful molecules. The project focuses on the implementation of a photolytic treatment process for these recoverable plastics (patent EP2839863-A1). This debromination generates volatile photoproducts constituting additional pollution. The multidisciplinary consortium formed, bringing together academics and industrialists, will therefore focus on the identification and quantification by advanced techniques of gaseous effluents in order to assess the potential for recovery of the bromine collected. To make the process clean and safe on an industrial scale, a strategy of capture and photolytic/photocatalytic neutralization after aqueous solubilization or adsorption will be implemented.
