Digital Epidemiology: Analysis of social network contents to anticipate fluctuations in transmission intensity and confinement efficiency of the SARS-COV2 – DigEpi

Submission summary

The propagation of the SARS-COV2 in France has completely overloaded health facilities until producing an unprecedented confinement on our territory. In order to mitigate as much as possible sanitary and economic consequences, it is mandatory to try anticipating the level of local transmission and the efficiency of social distancing measures during the next months. To this extent, digital epidemiology can bring interesting answers on population behavior and feelings, and therefore be used as a proxy to identify in advance transmission increase or confinement efficiency decrease, as it has already been shown for seasonal flu or during Chikungunya outbreaks.
During this project, we wish developing mathematical models that estimate the evolution of transmission intensity and efficiency of confinement measures within large French towns. Then, after having classified daily contents of twitter message through deep-learning algorithms, we will identify how the evolution of message contents can reflect, several days after, changes in efficiency of confinement measures and transmission intensity. Finally, we will develop an application for public health authorities that can analyze in real time social network messages in order to forecast at short-term, during this pandemic, a decrease of confinement efficiency that can result in an increase of transmission intensity.
