Submission summary

Context: This project falls within the general theme of "Ethics and social dynamics" and more specifically within the areas of "Representations, perceptions, attitudes, behaviours relating to the epidemic" and "Impact of the crisis on inequalities and policies to reduce inequalities".
The exceptional context created by the COVID-19 pandemic, which children and parents are facing, seems important to study, in particular in families of children under 6 years of age, early childhood being an essential stage that plays a central role in the future living conditions of individuals. This interdisciplinary project brings together the members of the BECO-UFTMiP GIS "Bébé, petite Enfance en COntextes" (https://beco.univ-tlse2.fr), in partnership with the Children's Hospital-CHU Toulouse, the Occitadys Association, the UMR EHESS-CNRS 8562, the Haute-Garonne Departmental Council, the Ideas Laboratory and the Labex SMS. The non-academic institutions (paediatricians, PMI, associations) involved in this project will allow, in addition to their skills and expertise, an important link with the most vulnerable populations.

The objective of this study, carried out before the progressive end of quarantine, scheduled for 11 May 2020, will allow for a better understanding of what mothers, fathers and their young children experience during confinement, their positive and negative experiences, to examine gendered and socially situated activities (educational, caring, sharing of domestic and educational tasks...) and the associated emotional state of each parent. These analyses will be compared with regards to demographic and socio-economic variables (gender, age, education, housing, employment, family structure, etc.) in order to document the ways in which this crisis may increases socio-cultural inequalities.

Methodology via a website pinel-jacquemin.wixsite.com/covjenfant validated by the DPD-CNRS and CER-UFTMiP: Data collection from 28 April to 11 May 2020: This survey is aimed at parents (>=18 years of age) with at least one child under the age of 6 currently quarantined in France (metropolitan France or overseas territories). The online questionnaire consists of different parts: general information, free expression of parents and children, emotional state, activities, employment, housing (estimated time approximately 30 mn). For more vulnerable groups, we will contact health, medical, medico-social and charitable structures so that they can make the link with them and help them to fill in the online self-questionnaire. Target population: 500 to 1000 participants (or more).

Implementation & Data collection: 28 April-11 May 2020. The questionnaire is put online; Data analysis and presentation of results: 12 months: May 2020 to May 2021.

The amount of aid requested and a brief description of its use: 129 541, 68 euros (IE coordination, IE statistics, 12 months post-doc, miscellaneous expenses).

Expected results: to provide knowledge on the experiences of families with young children who need special attention in terms of care and education, while coping with the many constraints related to the crisis. The data collected on educational and health inequalities according to gender, social affiliation and the geographical location of families will make it possible to implement a program to reduce inequalities.
