Electrical control of magnetization in fully epitaxial van der Waals heterostructures – ELMAX

Submission summary

The ELMAX project aims at studying and exploiting magneto-electric phenomena in fully van der Waals multilayers made by molecular beam epitaxy. The recent discovery of 2D ferromagnets enabled the study of spintronics devices fully made of van der Waals materials. ELMAX will pioneer the study of such devices and demonstrate the electrical control of the magnetization in them. Important efforts will be dedicated to the growth and characterization of large-area 2D ferromagnets and multilayers by molecular beam epitaxy. The coupling between the magnetization and electric fields will be enhanced by interfacing 2D ferromagnets with high spin-orbit van der Waals materials: transition metal dichalcogenides and topological insulators. Two magneto-electric effects will be investigated with transport measurements: the spin-galvanic effect and the electric field control of magnetic anisotropy. Both approaches target the realization of magnetization switching in an all-2D spin device.
