On-demand metasurfaces through individual control of pixelated phase-change materials – MetaOnDemand

Submission summary

The MetaOnDemand project aims at developing the selective addressing of individual pixel elements composing a metasurface to actively write, erase and reconfigure flat integrated devices in real-time. This original platform will be used to demonstrate the on-demand electrical drawing of metasurface devices using pixelated phase-change materials arrays. The ambition of the project is to fabricate proof-of-concept multifunctional optical devices that can be designed for both reflection and/or transmission for applications ranging from beam-steering in the near-infrared to holographic display in the visible as well as adaptive optics in these two wavelength ranges. Finally, we aim at designing a technologically realistic device that takes into account current state of the art processes and technologies at ST Microelectronics. This would be the first step towards industrial production of fast electrically-written and erased optical metasurfaces.
