Design of bio-hybrid materials based on biological entities and Metal-Organic Frameworks for environmental applications – EMERGE

Submission summary

The EMERGE project aims to design multifunctional materials through the assembly of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) and biological entities (enzyme and bacteria). The objective is to develop a novel type of MOF-based bio-immobilization matrices where the MOF will not only act as a porous host support able to participate to the mass-transfer of the reactants but may also boost the overall catalytic activity. Such innovative bio-hybrids materials will be designed for two applications: detection and degradation of residual antibiotics. Ink-jet printing will be investigated for the deposition of MOF-enzyme materials to manufacture a paper-based detecting device. Innovative bacteria-MOF materials will be designed for an efficient degradation of antibiotics.
