Joint research laboratory for evaluating the potential of algae in anti-infectious health in livestock production – ALGAHEALTH

Submission summary

2- Summary:
The goal of reducing the use of antibiotics in veterinary medicine can only be achieved if effective alternative prophylactic strategies are developed to protect livestock. In this context, because of their rapid turnover and their richness in nutrients and bioactive molecules, algae and algal extracts used as feed complements represent alternative natural solutions to improve the robustness of animals against infections and thus contribute to reduce the use of the antibiotics. In addition, the rapid renewal of the natural product represented by marine algae is an asset for the sustainability of the production chain of effective solutions in veterinary health.
AMADEITE is a French group (ETI), and a world leader specialized in marine biotechnology, on the valorization of Breton algae from harvest to transformation into innovative natural products providing nutrition and health for plants, animals and humans. The company has developed, internally, its own expertise regarding the preparation, identification and characterization of algal ingredients. The UMR-ISP has developed several in vitro and in vivo tools and analysis models recognized by the industrial sector for their capacity to determine the efficacy of natural products to improve animal health. Within the LabCom ALGAHEALTH, both partners will share their expertise to allow:
- The production and selection of bioactive ingredients (AMADEITE),
- The in vitro screening of these bioactive compounds by growth inhibition tests of various pathogenic bacteria, viruses and parasites (UMR-ISP).
- The evaluation of the ability of these compounds to inhibit the adhesion of pathogens to the mucosa as well as their potential to preserve tissue integrity and to modulate the inflammatory immune response (UMR-ISP).
- The zootechnical evaluation of the formulated products under field conditions in farms animals of pigs and poultry (AMADEITE) as well as their capacity to modulate the composition of the microbiota (UMR-ISP).
- The validation of selected bioactive ingredients to protect animals infected with pathogens in experimental biosafety level-3 facility (UMR-ISP and UE PFIE).
The innovation strategy of AMADEITE is the formulation of new products for the animal health market by 2022, to meet the requirements of the production of pigs and poultry without antibiotics from birth to slaughter.
