Educational Technologies for Teaching in Context – TEEC

Submission summary

The project, entitled “Educational Technologies for Teaching in Context”, proposes to instrument and test an educational innovation based on the clash of contexts. The hypotheses elaborated concern the adaptability of this innovation, which initially stems from science didactics, at various disciplines and grade levels.
Teachings based on the emergence of contexts effects plunge two groups of learners from different contexts into an investigative approach around a common theme. Each group discusses the concepts involved, using examples from their own context. Via a number of remote collaborations, each student works with their counterparts throughout the investigation, thus challenging their developing mental notions through confrontation with those of students in the other group. Everyone shares their culture, acquires digital skills, and gains disciplinary knowledge whose limitations and possibilities are more specifically identified.
Innovation has a generic nature that can be deployed in many situations, disciplines and grade levels. The proposed model, called "CLASH", raises context effects by causing a cognitive collision of students from different backgrounds, studying a scientific phenomenon together and being led to discuss what is common to the phenomenon and what is context-dependent.
This project will provide the scientific community with four components of innovation: 1) the "CLASH" model, 2) a pedagogical scenario that adds structure to the learning activities, 3) the "MAZCALC" calculator, capable of calculating context gap, and 4) the "CA2ITS" system (Context-Aware Affective Intelligent Tutoring System) capable of adapting depending on the context.
The methodology used is the Design-Based Research (DBR), since it is appropriate both to test hypotheses and to improve the innovation, working in synchrony with agents in the field. The didactic analysis of the data will be used in conjunction with an automatic emotional state recognition system to validate the "MAZCALC" calculator. The ambition of this project is to increase in situ experiments, all the while developing the system components. The innovation adoption process will also be systematically studied.
