Research and innovation laboratory for cutting tools in advanced machining processes – LARIOPAC

Research and innovation laboratory for cutting tools in advanced machining processes

With this Labcom, new innovative solutions will be proposed for the development of a new family of smart tools with controling interactions between the product, the process and the machined material. The background of the laboratory in terms of development of advanced theoretical approaches and knowledge ofEVATEC -TOOLS in design will be made for the developpment, manufacturing, and marketing of these special tools.

Overall objectives , scientific and Technical challenges

The LARIOPAC Labcom projects to develop a new generation of cutting tools able to self-manage their wear process during the machining process. Innovation works to be undertaken in this area will increase the productivity and competitiveness for concerned companies. The idea is therefore to develop scientific and technological background required for the establishment of a new concept for the overall multi-physics design of cutting tools: SMART TOOLS’.

The methodology and planned activities of the LARIOPAC laboratory are declined in three major research areas:
- Control of material-product –process interactions. In this axis, new innovative solutions for the development of smart tools will are proposed, studied and tested.
- These solutions are developed by the laboratory background in terms of the development of advanced theoretical approaches and knowledge of the EVATEC -TOOLS business Company.
- Integration of smart features.
- Multi-physical global design for smart tools (Smart design for cutting tools).

- Bibliographic study on the machining of composite materials. In this analysis the emphasis has been made on the processes for obtaining these materials and their application domain. The aim is to control the deformation modes experienced by composite materials based on their mechanical and geometrical characteristics.
- Performance f cutting tests on Nomex composite materials and aluminum with Evatec tools (classical geometries).
-Modelling of a complex milling operation.

- Experimental study of tool wear problem: analysis of materials and identification of wear modes (mechanical, thermal and physicochemical modes).
- Instrumentation of experimental tests : in- situ monitoring of the behavior of tools ( measuring temperature, pressure, effort and vibration).
- Numerical modeling of the behavior of cutting tools and their degradation.
- Development of new design methodologies (smart design )

Several publications are being prepared

The LARIOPAC LabCOM laboratory proposed by MMS research group from LEMTA lab (Mechanics of Materials and Structures, UMR CNRS 7563 and EVATEC TOOLS company project to develop a new generation of cutting tools. The latter must be able to self-manage their wear process during the machining process. Innovation projects to be undertaken in this area will increase the productivity for advanced machining processes (broaching, drilling, deep drilling, vertical turning, ...) and competitiveness for concerned companies. The idea is therefore to develop scientific and technological background required for the establishment of a new concept for the overall multi-physics design smart cutting tools. For such development, the challenge is how to control the material- process -product interactions governing the behavior of cutting tools under extreme thermomechanical loading. Under this scientific context in which many multidisciplinary challenges have to be solved and considered for research and development of the new LARIOPAC laboratory proposed with our industrial partner EVATEC.
