Synthesis of Nanotubes with specified properties – SYNAPSE

Submission summary

The overall goal of this 42 months project is to develop new catalysts allowing for a full control of the electronic properties (semi conducting or metallic) of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (SWCNTs) using conventional CVD growth techniques, during the growth, thus enabling their use in different kind of electronic devices, without sorting. Indeed, some important results recently obtained within the frame of a long-standing collaboration between two partners (ICMMO and LPICM) are clearly making this goal perfectly realistic. A new process, combining surface chemistry with coordination chemistry for the generation of well-defined metallic nanoparticles (NPs) catalysts turns out to be the key to an in-growth property control.
The SYNAPSE project will combine both experimental/theoretical approaches to improve the in-growth selectivity towards a given type of SWCNT, and get a better understanding of the fundamental reasons allowing for such a control. This will in turn provide guidelines for the definition of even more selective catalysts.
From the experimental point of view, special attention will be paid to the structural investigation of the mono/multi metallic nanoparticles and of the grown SWNTs (ONERA). A full set of powerful analytical tools (HRTEM, STEM, HREELS and XPS) will be used to analyze their composition/structure and correlate these features with the characteristics of the corresponding SWCNTs.
A detailed theoretical and computer simulation analysis of the growth mechanisms of SWCNTs will be performed. Developing new tools to investigate bimetallic catalysts, will make it possible to elucidate the origin of the property selectivity. This project will thus contribute to solve one of the most challenging roadblocks on the way to large-scale applications of SWCNTs, especially for future of CNT-based electronics.
