Impact of a robot "butler" at home on psychoaffective and cognitive state of elderly with mild cognitive impairment – Robadom

Submission summary

In France, the number of older people is increasing and will reach 26.5% of the general population in 2050. The number of the patients suffering from the Alzheimer's disease or other dementia in France is also increasing : the prevalence is around 860 000 nowaday and it is estimated to reach 1.3 millions in 2020 and 2.1 millions in 2040. Recent effort has been made to implement preventive measures that target "MCI" (mild cognitive impairment) people who are at risque to progress to Alzheimer's disease. There is no proven therapy for MCI. However, several studies on the efficacy of cognitive interventions in the MCI population report encouraging findings. These people wish to stay at home as long as possible but suffer from loneliness and solitude, which are sources of depression.
This project aims at conceiving a robot with emotions and language in order to support at home the elderly with MCI, living alone at home and suffering or not from depression. The objective of this project is to explore the acceptability of the robot in ecological situation. This project will enable to:
- determine appearance of the robot
- parameter the functions and behaviour of the robot for tailoring to the users' needs. The robot must be easy to use for the target population and must not be perceived as intrusive. The robot serves the elderly and is controlled by them, which enables the elderly to be more autonomous.
- evaluate the impact of the robot on elderly's daily life ( affective, cognitive, quality of life...) and the way the robot is perceived.

The workpackages are organised in order to reach the objectives. Three thematic axis emerge:
- specification of the interaction with older people with MCI
- development of the functions of perception of the robot and human-robot interaction
- clinical evaluations

The originality of the project is the use of a robot as a support for the elderly with MCI by improving their psychological and cognitive state. The robot which is able to interact with them through language and emotions, will become their assistant-companion.
We expected to obtain results in two aspects:
- the perception (acceptability, interaction) of the people towards the presence at home of the robot in their daily life during one month
- the interest of such a robot as an affective and cognitive support.
The project will assess the impact of the robot based on two issues: on the one hand, the impact on the loneliness and depression of persons with MCI who live alone, on the other hand, the impact of cognitive stimulation in this target population
