Limitation of the Impact of vehicules on the environment by means of aerodynamic control using synthetic microjets – LIVE CAMS

Submission summary

The goal of the present project of industrial research is the development of an efficient and validated methodology of drag reduction of automobile vehicles (up to 10%) using integrated MMEMS synthetic microjets (MMEMS : Micro-Magneto-Electro-Mechanical-Systems). The aim is the reduction of greenhouse gas and air polluant emissions.
Outputs of the project should be :
- a better numerical modelisation of the aerodynamics of automobile vehicules, caracterised in particular by threedimensional separated flows
- a prediction of the effect of synthetic jets on this kind of flows and the optimisation of their use in order to maximise the drag reduction
- the development of innovative synthetic microjet solutions fulfilling the functional specifications defined by experiments and simulations and satisfying the applicative specifications (silent, robust, possible to integrate in a vehicule without penalty on weight and esthetic , and easy to produce). These solutions are based on the original MMEMS integrated technologies already available and fabricated using combined microelectronic and quick prototyping technologies (mass production, high reproducibility, low cost, allowing the fabrication of small objects, easily integrable inside the car, scaled to the flows...). They are based on magnetic effects (large forces, large displacements, high "dynamic characteristics).
- Integration of these actuators in arrays within a real vehicule (industrial fabrication, work in real conditions).

The program will be splitted in two converging axis :
- Numerical calibration and experimental work using MMEMS SJ on a generic automobile geometry at reduced scales and representative of a scale 1 vehiculein terms of flow
- the development of innovative solutions to support the array of such integrated micro-actuators directly on a real vehicule and the evaluation of obtained gains on a scale 1 vehicule in aerodynamic, aeroacoustic, and climatic wind tunnels

This program concerns a finalised research for industrial needs leading to a notable improvement of existing vehicules or performances of the futur vehicules with important outputs in terms of production, company creation societal and environmental impacts.
